PALMA DE MALLORCA- LA LONJA EXHIBITIONS- TONY CRAGG-SCULPTURES
In one of the most emblematic buildings of the city, LA LONJA, located in the Plaza de La Lonja nº 5 in Palma de Mallorca, is being held until November the sculptures exhibition by the British artist Tony Cragg.
The opening times for this amazing exhibition in october and November, is tuesday to Sunday from 10.00 am to 14.00 pm and from 17.00pm to 20.00 pm.
Monday the exhibition is closed.
The artist Tony Cragg was born in Liverpool on April 9th, 1949 and his full name is Anthony Douglas Cragg.
His interest in science led him to work at a biochemical laboratory (1966 to 1968) as a technician, before turning fully to his artistic side.
He studied art and design at Gloucester College of Art and design in Cheltelham and at the Royal College of Art in London.
At the same time he was studing, he got a job in a foundry, and that is where he began to be interested in sculpture.
During the first half of the 80s his sculptures are made with found and scrapped materials, coming from construction or domestic objects, in the middle of this decade he start to incorporate into his work traditional materials such as iron, bronze, plaster, glass or stone.
In 1988 he was awarded with the prestigious Turner Prize, and in 2002 he was awarded with the Pipenbrock prize of sculpture, in 2007 he was chosen to recieve the “Praemium Imperiale” for sculputure, among many other distinctions.
In 1977 he left the UK and moved to Wuppertal in Germany but also has a studio at Tjörn, Swedish west coast.
Nowadays, Cragg is the director of the Dusseldorf Academy of Fine Art in Germany where he also is as professor since 1978,and since 1994 Cragg is also a member of Royal academy of Arts in London and member of the European Academy of Arts and Sciences .
His work has been exhibited in some of the world´s most prestigious museums and art galleries, an special mention for his participation in 1988 into 42nd edition Venice Biennale, where he represented United Kingdom.
