The sculpture was made by a sculptor born in 1914 Guernica (Vizcaya), but settled in Mallorca since 1939 called Horacio de Eguía

The sculpture is made of bronze and stone, and it was commissioned by the association Friends of Father Junipero Serra in 1962, to commemorate the 250th anniversary of our most international franciscan (1963).

But the realization of this statue was delayed and  it was not ready till 1965, and as has happened to many statues in our city, it had different locations, until  finally it was settled in its present location, San Francisco square in Palma.

Horacio de Eguia, is a sculptor who has done several Works on our island as the sculpture of Blessed Ramon Llull  in Paseo Sagrera , L’espigolera the monument to the writer Maria Antonia Salva born in Llucmajor, located in her hometown, the village of LLucmajor, near the cloister of San Buenaventura,  the Roman statues of La Rambla in Palma or Santa Catalina Tomas “La Beata” in Valldemossa close to the house where she was born .

In Cuba ,Havana, in  San Francisco de Asis square, 29th  April 2005, was placed a replica (used the same mold) of this sculpture of Father Serra and was donated by the foundation Iberostar from Mallorca.

This sculpture commemorates the visit of Father Junipero Serra  to Cuba middle of the eighteenth century  to the Franciscan convent of Havana.
